How is the DNA sample collected?
Samples are obtained by using a swab and rubbing the inside of the cheek for approximately 10 seconds.
What do I need to bring to the appointment?
Participants are required to bring photo identification for adults and birth certificate, social security card, or immunization records for minors. They must be legal guardian of any minor being collected.
What will happen at the sample collection appointment?
Participants will fill out paperwork, pay for the test, a trained collector will take pictures, identification documents, and collect the samples.
What happens if the tested parties live in different cities or states?
DNA Solutions can arrange for collections in different cities and states.
What types of samples do you use?
Cheek swab is the primary sample type. We also accept blood samples and non-standard samples including: tooth, organ/tissue, hair, toothbrush, fingernails, clothing, etc. There is an additional charge for non-standard sample types.
Is there a different in accuracy between buccal swabs and blood?
No. An individual's DNA is the same no matter where it is collected.
Can samples be collected at home?
Yes. Individuals can purchase an
in-home kit online. A kit will arrive at your home within 2 business days and samples can be collected from your home and mailed to DNA Solutions. Results from this type of collection are not admissable in court. This testing is for your our piece of mind.
What if my sample envelope is wet from the swabs?
That is fine as long as the swab remains inside the envelope.
Can the germs from your mouth contaminate the sample?
No. Our testing is only for human genetic material. We do recommend the mouth be clean when collecting a mouth swab sample; however, the germs will not contaminate your sample.
Do the DNA samples expire?
DNA samples will degrade over time. We recommend storing in a cool, dry place after collecting your samples.

How old does a child need to be before testing?
There is no age limit on collecting DNA. We have tested many newborns.
How soon can I have my sample collected?
A sample can be collected as soon as a kit is ordered or a payment is processed.
What does the DNA test kit contain?
A DNA test kit contains paperwork, envelopes with buccal swabs, gloves to collect the sample, evidence tape, and return mailing label.
What happens to the test samples after the test?
Test samples and documentation for legal cases are stored up to 5 years after your test and then destroyed.
What does “chain of custody” mean?
Chain of Custody is a legal document that tracks the sample from the time of collection to the time it is tested. Each person that comes in contact with the sample is documented to trace the sample.
