Yes. DNA Solutions can test individuals from New York. A doctor's prescription is required to purchase a DNA test from the state of New York.
Do I need a doctor’s order or a court order to start a paternity test?
A doctor's order or court order is only required in the State of New York or if an individual is deceased.
What is the difference between the legal test and the private test?
A legal test is court admissible. The identity of each individual tested is varified and the chain of custody is tracked. A third party performs the collection. Results are delivered within 3 business days. Informational or private test is for your own peace of mind and is not court admissible. You can perform the collections in your own home. The results are delivered in 1 - 2 business days.
I would like to order a legally admissible paternity test without the father knowing about it. Can this be done?
No. The father must give permission for his DNA to be collected for a legal test.
Prenatal DNA
Are prenatal paternity tests available?
Yes, DNA Solutions does offer Prenatal DNA testing. A doctor's order is required for this test. This is done using chorionic villi or amniotic fluid.
What is amniocentesis?
An amniocentesis is the sampling of amniotic fluid using a hollow needle inserted into the uterus.
Who will collect amniotic fluid samples?
The doctor's office will collect amniotic fluid samples.
Does a physician need to collect samples from the parents?
The parents will need to schedule an onsite collection for legal cases or obtain a at home kit for informational cases.
Is a doctor's order required for a prenatal test?
Yes.
Does the mother have to provide a sample in a prenatal paternity test?

Does the mother need to be tested for a paternity case?
It is not required for the mother to be tested, but the mother’s sample is strongly recommended and improves statistical results.
What if there are two alleged fathers who are related?
DNA is unique to each individual. If two alleged fathers are related, it is necessary to provide the mother's sample to improve the statistical results of the test.
Can paternity be determined if the alleged father is not available for testing?
Yes, DNA Solutions offers other tests that can prove relationship with the alleged father using external family members and siblings. Grandparents, aunts and uncles, full or half siblings can be used to establish relationships with out the true alleged father's sample.
Can testing be performed before a child is born?
DNA Solutions does offer Prenatal DNA testing. A doctor's order is required for this test. This is done using chorionic villi or amniotic fluid.
What if I want to test more than one child or alleged parent?
There is no limit on the number of tested parties. The base test price includes three samples, there is an additional cost for each additional tested party.

The fee includes a kit, three tested parties, return mailing label, shipping, and results.
Do I have to pay an extra fee for specimen collection?
An extra fee is required if the tested parties require multiple site collections.
Is DNA paternity testing covered by health insurance?
No. Relationship DNA testing is private pay.

How much does a paternity test cost?
The base price for a paternity test online is $99 for an informational test and $350 for a legal test (not available online).
Sample Collection
How is the DNA sample collected?
Samples are obtained by using a swab and rubbing the inside of the cheek for approximately 10 seconds.
What do I need to bring to the appointment?
Participants are required to bring photo identification for adults and birth certificate, social security card, or immunization records for minors. They must be legal guardian of any minor being collected.
What will happen at the sample collection appointment?
Participants will fill out paperwork, pay for the test, a trained collector will take pictures, identification documents, and collect the samples.
What happens if the tested parties live in different cities or states?
DNA Solutions can arrange for collections in different cities and states.
What types of samples do you use?
Cheek swab is the primary sample type. We also accept blood samples and non-standard samples including: tooth, organ/tissue, hair, toothbrush, fingernails, clothing, etc. There is an additional charge for non-standard sample types.
Is there a different in accuracy between buccal swabs and blood?
No. An individual's DNA is the same no matter where it is collected.
Can samples be collected at home?
Yes. Individuals can purchase an in-home kit online. A kit will arrive at your home within 2 business days and samples can be collected from your home and mailed to DNA Solutions. Results from this type of collection are not admissable in court. This testing is for your our piece of mind.
What if my sample envelope is wet from the swabs?
That is fine as long as the swab remains inside the envelope.
Can the germs from your mouth contaminate the sample?
No. Our testing is only for human genetic material. We do recommend the mouth be clean when collecting a mouth swab sample; however, the germs will not contaminate your sample.
Do the DNA samples expire?
DNA samples will degrade over time. We recommend storing in a cool, dry place after collecting your samples.

How old does a child need to be before testing?
There is no age limit on collecting DNA. We have tested many newborns.
How soon can I have my sample collected?
A sample can be collected as soon as a kit is ordered or a payment is processed.
What does the DNA test kit contain?
A DNA test kit contains paperwork, envelopes with buccal swabs, gloves to collect the sample, evidence tape, and return mailing label.
What happens to the test samples after the test?
Test samples and documentation for legal cases are stored up to 5 years after your test and then destroyed.
What does “chain of custody” mean?
Chain of Custody is a legal document that tracks the sample from the time of collection to the time it is tested. Each person that comes in contact with the sample is documented to trace the sample.
Results
How long does the test take?
Results take up to 3 business days for legal tests or 1-2 business days for non-legal or informational tests.
What will the results indicate?
The results will indicate the statistical probability that the alleged father is excluded or not excluded as the biological father.
Will results be accepted in court?
A legal test result is accepted in court.
How will I receive my results?
Results are received via email or through the mail.
Are the results confidential?
Yes, results are only accessed through the communication channels indicated on the sample collection forms.
What do the results look like, and how do I interpret them?
Your report will indicate who was teted, present the results of the genetic testing done, provide numerical statistical conclusions and a narative descibing the probability that the relationship tested (paternity, maternity, grandparentage, siblings, auant or uncle) is true or not.
How accurate is the DNA paternity test?
DNA paternity tests are 99% accurate.
Can I receive a copy of the paternity test results when I am the biological mother of the child?
For a legal test, if you are the paying individual and/or a tested participate, you can receive a copy of the paternity test results. Results of informational teting goes to the individual requesting the testing.
If I had an operation or medical condition does it affect the results?
If the sample collected is a mouth swab there should be no effect on the outcome of the genetic testing. You should not provide a blood sample if you have recently had a blood transfusion or ever had a bone marrow transplant.
Can I use my test results to obtain child support?
Legal paternity test results can be used as a document to prove relationship for child support of social security benefits.
